Why A Personal Trainer Gets You Further Than You Think

Most people think a personal trainer is someone who counts your reps and tells you to drink more water.

The reality is, the reps they count aren't the point. It's the ones you'd never have done on your own.

You lift heavier than you would alone

This isn't just me being biased. Obviously I am. But there's a study from 2000 that split lifters into two groups for 12 weeks. Same programme. One group had a coach in the room, one didn't.

The coached group picked heavier weights, week after week. And by the end they were stronger. Here's the study if you want it.

Left to ourselves, most of us pick a weight that feels fine. Fine doesn't change anything.

You stop wasting time

No wandering round the gym working out what's next. No 3 different programmes off Instagram in a month. No doing the stuff you like and skipping the stuff you need.

55 minutes. Every minute of it has a job.

You turn up

This is the big one. It's a lot easier to skip the gym than it is to skip a person who's waiting for you at 7am.

And turning up beats the perfect programme every single time. I've said it before. I'll keep saying it.

Someone notices

The knee that's grumbling. The week you're clearly running on 4 hours of sleep. The day you're ready to go up a weight and don't know it yet.

A plan on your phone can't see any of that. I can. And I'll change the session there and then.

It gets you further, and then it sets you free

Here's the bit people don't expect. My job isn't to keep you forever. It's to teach you enough that one day you don't need me.

Better technique. Better habits. Knowing what to do on a bad week. That stays with you long after the sessions stop.

Timeout over

A personal trainer isn't a luxury for people who are already fit. It's a shortcut for people who are busy, a bit stuck, or starting again.

You'll lift more, waste less time and actually keep going. That's more progress than you think.

If that sounds like what you need, in person in Birmingham or online, I can help. It's what I do every single day. Check out bysteve.uk or DM me on Instagram at @trained_by_steve.
